branding for your career - part 1

why personal branding is becoming the number-one tool for successful executives and entrepreneurs.

How many times have you had phone calls from companies that have no idea who you are or what you do? Or if you are a business owner, how many CVs have you received and then discarded because of lack of relevance to what you do or what you are looking for?

These budding entrepreneurs and executives went forward and took action without building their brand. They got desperate and wanted a quick fix to get the business or the job.
Your Brand has to be built in order that people relate to you. It needs to be formed organically, and it should be used as a way of delivering your unique message time after time.
But what is a personal brand? How can something that is used for celebrities and corporations work for me?

A personal brand is a clear idea and expectation that comes to mind when others think of you.

Think about someone you know professionally, for example; maybe someone you would go to for career and business advice. Once you have them in your mind ask yourself what made you choose them. Was it their knowledge in a particular area? … their enthusiasm? Perhaps they are a good listener. Just as you select people for their attributes, people will do the same with you. What do people call you for, or ask your advice on?

Personal branding is the powerful way that you communicate and demonstrate what you stand for - your vision, values, skills, passions and attributes. It is what people see of you - what you project to others. It is their perception of you: it is not the whole of you. By communicating your value to people you want to work with you can develop a brand that is the ‘number-one’ choice, just as larger corporations and celebrities do, so that clients and employers can identify and relate to you on a professional and personal level. It is not about creating or moulding yourself into someone you think you should be. It is not about being arrogant or egotistical. It is authentic and true to who you are.

Today business is all about trust. Your aim should be to be selected by a client or employer through your reputation and network. This is likely to take longer to establish, however you should be building your brand before you need to promote it.

By taking steps to discover your personal brand and understand who you are, what you do and what makes you different you will be able to reveal to your potential employers and clients that you are more than your references, job title, or the information on your CV or website.
By developing your Personal Brand organically you will create a reputation in your marketplace over a period of time. Before long you will be seen as a credible business person or executive with the right skills, knowledge and characteristics for the job. You will be able to increase your visibility through various considered strategies and achieve more success by sending a clear, consistent and targeted message over time.

By managing your brand in this way you will be able to stand out and be seen for your assets, reputation and expertise. People in your network will do the work of selling for you because they will want to be associated with a strong dynamic brand.

Hello Dawn:

As you say, you don´t make your personal brand from scratch but you DISCOVER your brand.

I mean that you have to look into your inner core, take notice of your values and "export" them to your outer side, to the side others see.

So, in this way your brand will be consistent because it will really be you.

If you don´t do the process this way , your brand will be only a mask.
